Notre Dame Prep students interested in careers in healthcare once again excelled at a regional competition in Troy sponsored by HOSA, a global nonprofit organization focused on empowering future health professionals to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration and experience.

Seniors Tina Yeras and Alessa Atallah hold their bronze and silver medals respectively after finishing in the top three at the Nov. 16 regional leadership conference sponsored by the Michigan chapter of HOSA.

At the Nov. 16 regional leadership conference sponsored by the Michigan chapter of HOSA, which is an international career and technical student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education Division of ACTE, seven members of Notre Dame Prep's HOSA chapter placed in the top seven at Troy High School and advancing to the state competition in April. In addition, two NDP students earned top-three awards at the event attended by more than 1,400 students, which included a total of 18 from NDP.

Seniors Alessa Atallah, Erin Connelly, Matthew Kafarski, Geralyn Nguyen and Tina Yeras; junior Krrish Patel; and sophomore Lucy Janus all achieved top seven in their respective events, with Atallah ranking second and Yeras ranking third.

HOSA competitions typically involve a series of individual or team events designed to test and showcase the knowledge and skills of high school and college students interested in healthcare careers, allowing them to participate in simulated real-world scenarios across various medical fields, from basic health science to advanced clinical skills, with the goal of developing future healthcare professionals.

Senior Nguyen is glad she decided to join HOSA.

"HOSA has opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of the health professions field," she said. "Before participating in it, I had no experience whatsoever. But now I get a glimpse into what I might be doing in the future!"

Formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, HOSA is comprised of middle school, secondary and post-secondary/collegiate students, along with professionals, alumni and honorary members.

The 2025 Michigan HOSA State Leadership Conference will be held April 17-18, 2025, at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme, Michigan.
