Juan Pablo Turrubiartes and Steven Carter, or team 3333T, the "Tornado Troopers," win highest judged award in Nov. 18 Hudsonville competition.

Last Saturday, seventh graders Juan Pablo Turrubiartes and Steven Carter traveled to the west side of the state for a 24-team VEX Robotics Competition. They went 5-1 in qualifications at the Hudsonville Robotics MS Over-Under Tournament for Region 4 — which was held at Hudsonville High School — putting them in a six-way tie with the best win-loss record and ranking them fifth.

According to Jerry Palardy, NDP's robotics team mentor and coach, the two boys also placed second in skills and led to their selection by the first-ranked team as an alliance partner.

"Unfortunately, their alliance was not so lucky in the quarterfinals as they lost a close match with a score of 121 to 127," said Palardy. "However, the team left nothing to chance when it came to the judging aspect of the competition."

Palardy said the team has maintained such an impeccable notebook all year, they once again impressed the judges with their knowledge and understanding of their robot design during the team interview.

"In fact, the judges selected team 3333T as the best overall team in the entire competition and presented them with the Excellence Award," he added.

Saturday's award also qualifie the "Tornado Troopers" for the Michigan Middle School State Championship and will join a number of fellow Notre Dame Prep VRC teams in Grandville in February.

In other NDP robotics news, high school team #3333J served up a strong showing at Kettering.

On Sunday, Nov. 19, NDP seniors Jose Turrubiartes, Jeffrey Guo, Beck Silver and Henry Wilson traveled to Kettering University in Flint for another VEX competition. The team won the Judges Award, advanced to the semifinals, and obtained a season-high skills score. That strong showing was enough to advance them to the February Michigan State Championship.

Currently NDP has fielded four teams thus far who are going to the state finals early next year.
