Annual event by the Notre Dame Prep band engages 7th and 8th graders with real-time "Friday-night lights" experience.

Notre Dame Prep's award-winning marching band has chosen Elton John music as part of their Friday night performances this year.

This Friday, the Notre Dame Prep marching band will once again bring in seventh and eighth grade students from its middle school and other area middle schools to participate in a real high-school football game performance. Called "March Up," the event purports to give younger students the opportunity to see what it's like to be a member of the NDP marching band.

According to NDP band director Claire Zavolta NDP'10, it's also another great opportunity to give the students and their families a real taste of the exciting atmosphere of a fall Friday night on the football field.

"At this event, the 7th and 8th grade students are paired with a buddy instrument — an NDP upper school band member — who hosts them for one night," she said. "The middle school students play the Star Spangled Banner and Notre Dame Victory March on the field with the regular band. They then sit in the stands and play pep songs with us for the first half of the game."

Notre Dame Prep's undefeated varsity football team plays Dearborn Divine Child this Friday at 7 p.m. on the William Kozyra Alumni Field.

Zavolta added that NDP's middle school musicians are really stoked for Friday.

"When I first shared with our 7th grade students that they would be participating in March Up this year, a noticeable excitement filled our classroom," she said. "Ever since I passed out the Victory March, they have been practicing it on repeat — even when we're supposed to be working on Jingle Bells!"

Seventh and eighth graders alongside the NDP marching band will be performing the Star Spangled Banner among other music this Friday night.
