GRAND LEDGE –  The Pontiac Notre Dame Prep Fighting Irish claimed their first boys soccer state title with a 3-2 win over the Elk Rapids Elks in Saturday afternoon’s D3 final.

“It’s awesome to make history for my school. It just means a lot, especially with everybody, all of my peers and the whole school and the athletic director,” Fighting Irish senior captain Will Lanham said. “It’s great to finally win it for the school.”

Notre Dame had been an offensive juggernaut all season averaging better than three goals per game both in the regular season and in the playoffs, and it didn’t take the Irish long to get on the board in this one as their firepower was on full display early and often. Following a handful of chances in the opening minutes, the Fighting Irish cashed one in just 8:27 into the game when Benjamin Liparoto redirected a ball played in front by Daniel Lebanion that eluded the goalkeeper for a 1-0 Notre Dame lead.
