Notre Dame Prep junior gets rare honor from the Boy Scouts of America after constructing team-building equipment for Subiaco Retreat House.

Notre Dame Prep junior Kevin Carter Jr. has been in scouting for eight years.

Kevin Carter Jr., a junior at Notre Dame Preparatory School, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given by the Boy Scouts of America. According to BSA, only 4% of the nearly three million scouts nationwide earn Eagle Scout status.

Carter's achievement brings the number of Notre Dame Prep Eagle Scouts to well more than 20 in the past few years, joining recent alums Aaron McGhee NDP'22 and his brother, Evan NDP'22, who became Eagle Scouts in 2022.

For his Eagle project, Carter built an 8 ft. x 8 ft. octagon balance deck that was installed at the Subiaco Youth Retreat House, a Catholic organization sponsored by the Benedictine monks located in Oxford, Michigan. He said the balance deck, which will be used for team-building exercises for students on retreat, resulted from a conversation with a Subiaco youth leader.

"One night, before youth group activities, my youth leader asked me if I would be interested in building a balancing platform for the retreat house," said Carter. "She said that 'Bromar' (Bro. Martin Singer, OSB Obl), who manages Subiaco and is one of NDP’s former teachers, wants some type of team-building activity for the retreat house. I also wanted to build something for the Church in general, so this was a great opportunity for me to do both."

Carter, who has been a scout for eight years, truly loves what the organization is all about.

"I find that the leadership opportunities with the Scouts and how I've learned how to pass on my own skills to others are very fulfilling," he said.

A familiar face on the Notre Dame Prep campus since middle school, Carter has high praise for what the school's meant to him.

"Thanks to NDP I have found many opportunities to express myself and to pursue my interests," he said. "I am the president of the NDP Podcast Club, which is called Talk of the Irish, and a member of the state board for the Michigan Youth in Government. Thanks to these two clubs in particular, my public speaking has greatly improved along with my leadership skills."

And those extracurriculars and skills will no doubt come in handy after high school as Carter plans to pursue a major in business administration with a focus in pre-law.
