Inaugural class of Notre Dame Prep's Athletic Hall of Fame includes much beloved longtime coach, athletic director and school administrator Betty Wroubel.

Longtime coach and athletic director Betty Wroubel will be inducted into the inaugural Notre Dame Prep Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 7.

On Friday, Feb. 7, Notre Dame Prep will induct its first class into the Athletic Hall of Fame, which features alumni, an administrator and coach, and a longtime parent volunteer and supporter. The inaugural class for the year 2024 includes Bobbie Bieszki NDP'00, Molly Coldren NDP'08, Mike Durkin, Nathan Mylenek NDP'16 and Betty Wroubel.

As we get closer to that special night, which is this Friday, we are profiling each inductee, one at a time, and longtime coach and athletic director Betty Wroubel is the subject of today's review.

Since 1994, when Notre Dame Prep was founded, Betty Wroubel has served as a teacher, athletic director and coach at the school. Also, since then, Wroubel has gathered a slew of honors and awards, all very well deserved. She's been the recipient of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Allen W. Bush Award (2010), the MHSAA Women in Sport Leadership State Award (2016), Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA) Athletic Director of the Year Award (2020) and MIAAA George Lovich State of Merit Award (2022), to name a few.

Wroubel is with Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs and NDP head football coach Pat Fox during the Gibbs football camp held at NDP last summer.

In 2009, under Wroubel's guidance, Notre Dame Prep became the first private and Catholic school in Michigan to earn the MIAAA's Exemplary Athletic Program award. As a coach, she led NDP's predecessor Pontiac Catholic's softball team to a Class C title in 1983 and the Notre Dame Prep volleyball teams to Class B/Division 2 titles in 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2021. In total, Wroubel has won more than 1,800 games as a volleyball coach and more than 1,000 games as a softball coach.

She was named National High School Coach of the Year by AVCA in 2007 and state coach of the year by the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association (MIVCA) for Class B in 2007, 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2021. Betty also has been named the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) National Coach of the Year in 2019, the Michigan High School Coaches Association (MHSCA) Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2014 and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coach of the Year for volleyball in 2018. She also is a member of five athletic halls of fame.

"When you think about Notre Dame Prep athletics, Betty Wroubel is the first name that comes to mind," said Aaron Crouse, associate athletic director for NDP. "Betty has embodied the idea of servant leader during her time at Notre Dame Prep as an athletic director, coach and educator."

Wroubel has led NDP volleyball to Class B/Division 2 titles in 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2021.

Andy Guest, Notre Dame Prep's head of school, agrees with Crouse.

"There's probably not a bigger name in Notre Dame Prep athletics than Betty Wroubel, and one of the biggest names in school athletics in the state," Guest said. "Teacher, administrator, athletic director for all 18 of our state championships and nationally acclaimed volleyball and softball coach. Betty is a seasoned pro, the epitome of a team player, dedicated servant to our Catholic and Marist mission and a good friend to me. It is entirely fitting that she is recognized in our first athletic hall of fame class."

Crouse adds that his longtime fellow athletic administrator has always demonstrated a commitment to providing the best possible athletic experience for all.

"Whether it's the student-athletes, the coaches, parents or all other stakeholders at Notre Dame Prep, she selflessly and consistently puts her responsibilities to the school and to the school community first."

Wroubel, center with Fr. Leon Olszamowski, s.m., is at the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Feb. 24, 2010, for the Betty A. Wroubel Athletic Performance Center, a state-of-the-art training facility for Notre Dame Prep student-athletes at all levels. More photos below.

An induction ceremony for the inaugural class, which coincides with the 30th anniversary of Notre Dame Prep, will be held at halftime of the NDP boys varsity basketball game against Genesee Christian School on Friday, Feb. 7, with tip off at 5:30 p.m. Following, the NDP girls varsity basketball team will take on Genesee Christian School at 7 p.m.

A meet and greet will be held in the athletics triangle following the induction. The Notre Dame Prep athletic booster club will also be hosting a basket raffle throughout the evening with proceeds benefiting Notre Dame Prep athletics and the hall of fame.

For the Notre Dame Prep Athletic Hall of Fame's Class of 2025, nominations are due by May 1, 2025. Please click here for more information.
