Despite the challenges of creating and critiquing art during a pandemic, the school brings home 40 awards from national art competition.

Continuing a streak of top performances in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, student-artists from Notre Dame Prep earned 40 awards in the just-announced results in the annual celebration of the arts.

According to Sandy LewAllen, Notre Dame’s art chair, 24 NDP students received a total of 40 awards (16 Gold Keys, 13 Silver Keys and 11 honorable mentions) for the Southeastern Michigan region. See the list of winners and their artwork below. All of the art was created in calendar year 2020 and submitted to Scholastic on Dec. 15, 2020.

"It's been a challenging year, to say the least," said LewAllen. "Switching from face-to-face learning to online learning and then back again is exceptionally difficult for the arts. Receiving 40 awards by Notre Dame art students last week is no small feat. These art students balanced their full-curricular load of online learning, stayed motivated, found their creative spark, and pushed through to complete their projects."

A virtual awards ceremony honoring the Detroit-area Scholastic winners will be held Mar. 9, LewAllen said. Due to the pandemic, Detroit’s College for Creative Studies is unable to host the awards ceremony or the exhibition this year. She said the National Awards will be announced in late March.

LewAllen said that distance schooling presented other challenges for her art students as well.

"Sharing authentic feedback during their art-making process definitely posed a challenge," she said. "It’s problematic to view true colors and critique artwork through tablets, screens and Zoom. But, like most students across the globe, they persevered. This speaks to the integrity, resilience and determination of this group of students. Receiving 40 awards during ‘normal’ times is quite an achievement. Doing this during a global pandemic is, quite frankly, super impressive. We are beyond proud of them all!"

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. Over the years, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King and John Updike.

The process for the art competition begins across the country as young artists and writers in grades 7-12 submit work in 28 categories of art and writing to a network of regional affiliates who present award ceremonies and exhibits for selected works on a local level. Gold Keys, the highest awards, are then submitted from each region for national adjudication by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. National Gold and Silver Medal winning students and their teachers receive national recognition, and typically are invited to attend the exhibit in New York and award ceremony at Carnegie Hall.

In the last five years alone, students submitted nearly 900,000 original works of art and writing. During that period, more than 60 top art institutes and colleges have partnered with the Awards to make $40 million in scholarships and financial aid available to regional and national Scholastic Award winners.

Nearly 5,500 individual entries and more than 200 portfolios from middle and high school students were entered in about 15 categories this year. Many excellent works were submitted and received American Vision, Gold Key, Silver Key and honorable mention awards. All Gold Key work will be judged at the national level in March.
